Don’t Be Disheartened
Entrepreneurs get paid for the value they bring and the results they generate. If they can’t deliver what they promised, they won’t get paid. On the other hand, employees are used to exchanging time for money. They work 8 hours, sometimes longer, then wait for their paycheck. Some won’t even get paid unless they put in the requisite time.
The reason many aspiring online business owners get disheartened quickly is because they’re so used to getting money for their time as employees. They easily give up on their business when they don’t see any results.
I remember having the same doubts myself. I quit college to start my own online business and invested over $40,000 into it. I spent 9 months without seeing any significant returns and began to question the validity of my decision. Yet I persevered and never got disheartened. I knew I just had to use the right strategies to get the best results.
Repeat the Steps of Success
After nine months, my hard work and dedication paid off. I got my first big sale! I made a $1,000 commission from an Australian customer and repeated that success with my second commission about 3 weeks later. The pattern continued.
When you get your first chunk of success, you have to ask yourself, “What did I do to earn that?” That’s what I did. I then noted those very steps that led to my first sale and simply repeated the process.
Employees rarely afford the feeling of strategically earning their money. As an entrepreneur, when you find a winning strategy or technique, just go with it.
Be Productive, Not Busy
When you start your own business, it can be tempting to indulge in trivial tasks that you think are important at the time, such as logo designs, business cards, administrative tasks, etc. These things will only make you appear busy, but you’re not really being productive.
To shift from being an employee to an entrepreneur, you have to fill each second with real productivity. Otherwise, you’ll never get the results you need. The very first thing you should do as an entrepreneur is focus on the things that will generate cash. Once you get your first bit of cash into the company, you can then pay someone else to complete the non-cash generating tasks.
“Being your own boss” is one of the main reasons people want to quit their work and start a company. The freedom that comes from being the boss cannot be matched by the limitations you experience an employee.
However, there are some potential slippery slopes of running your own show. Employees have managers or supervisors to inform them if they’re falling short on projects or performing poorly. But, when you’re the boss of your own company, you have to find ways to keep yourself on your toes, such as:
- Send an email to inform people of your webinar’s schedule and prepare before the specified date comes.
• Post social media updates about new business goals you’re hoping to hit.
• Tell your close friends, family and employees that you will sacrifice a certain luxury if you don’t meet a set goal. For example, if you fail to hit your expected revenue by the end of the month, you won’t take that much-talked-about vacation.
Going from an employee to an entrepreneur is all about shifting your perception. The quicker you think, act and work like an entrepreneur, the faster you’ll see results. Stanford psychologist, Carol Dweck, states, “It’s all about your mindset. Successful people tend to focus on growth, solving problems, and self-improvement, while unsuccessful people think of their abilities as fixed assets and avoid challenges.” So to succeed as an entrepreneur, you have to shift your focus from working paycheck to paycheck and concentrate on growing your own empire.
